Psychological symptoms, stemming from a traumatic experience are only directly treated with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) if they fulfil the Diagnostic Classification for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as per NICE guidance (NICE (2005) Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, a significant number of trauma related presentations and symptoms do not meet the diagnostic threshold but still may benefit from EMDR.
As to adhere to evidence based practice, give patients informed choice of treatment options and still be able to respond to the new demand Any Qualified Provider (AQP) is placing on services it would be helpful to allow us to use our EMDR skills and investigate a broader delivery of EMDR to the non-PTSD presentations arena.
The workshop will present how I explored the effectiveness of EMDR when treating disorders that have their onset in significant/traumatic life events within our IAPT service and investigate the evidence-base to support broadening the use of EMDR beyond only presentations fitting the Diagnostic Criteria for PTSD.
My hypothesis is that apart from it giving my patients extra options for treatment, it might have a significant impact on patients that can’t proceed with the exposure aspect of the usual treatment offered, not only because of the anxiety they are experiencing but because of the fear of re-traumatisation itself. In addition there is some precedent for EMDR patients experiencing a speedier recovery. ( de Roos, C. et al. (2011), Jaberghaderi, et al (2004). Lee, C., et al. (2002)).
The aim of this workshop is
To share a service evaluation of an IAPT service
To progress the use of EMDR in IAPT with trauma presentations with a non PTSD diagnosis.
The workshop will cover
How you can do a service review within IAPT, involving your patients
The outcomes of LTW/IAPT service review
Suggestions what needs to be in place (training)to develop and offer an EMDR pathway within an IAPT service
Explore how to move further into research
