Tedeschi & Calhoun (1995) stated that "(Post Traumatic) Growth occurs when the trauma assumes a central place in the life story" (p85). With this in mind, this symposium presentation focuses on a first-hand account of personal trauma and what happened next, or specifically how it happened. Briefly chronicling child and adolescent traumas and their effects, I will examine the part EMDR played in unravelling and resolving both trauma and after-effects, and introduce the concept of 'Good Father Messages' as a guide through to Post Traumatic Growth in a continually unfolding future. This journey may act as both a focus for future research and as an aide memoir to EMDR clinicians specifically aiming at Post Traumatic Growth in their clients.
Daughter of a US Navy fighter pilot spent her childhood on and around US Naval Bases. After a 22 year career in Flight Service with Pan Am, Dr Condor moved to the wild and isolated coastline of Big Sur, CA. She worked and studied at Esalen Institute. In 1992, Dr Condor encountered EMDR for the first time. It was an identity-shifting experience. She moved to Los Angeles, CA, earned her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and opened her private practice as a psychotherapist. She has developed home study programs for survivors of childhood abuse as adjuncts for therapy.
